The phrase Social Media has become a huge term over the past year.  Social networking sites are all over the place. If you are not, you should participate. However, be careful how much you do. It’s not necessary to be involved with 50 different websites at the same time. You should partake in 1 or 2 consistently that way you will see a better bang for your buck. If you want to narrow your focus here is what we suggest:

Blogs: WordPress, Blogger, Tumblr
A blog is the best place to start. Anyone of the above platforms has a hefty community of users and are very well received by search engines. Blogging is great because it teaches you to write for an audience which is a fantastic skill to have

Twitter: HootSuite or TweetDeck
The best part of Twitter is you can plan your post in the morning and not have to worry about it the rest of the day.  The second best thing is that you only have to type a few words to make a big impact. Less is more in this medium but its more about getting to your target market quickly. So get to the point. Twitter will continue be a very big player in the Social Media revolution.

Facebook
This is the one that everyone seems to want to be a part of, 500 million strong.  It’s great because it’s the easiest to “be you” and just have fun.  The way to be successful as a business owner on Facebook is to start by becoming a part of the conversation in your local community. What is the point of “friend’ing” a person in California if you own a restaurant in Monroe NC. Seek out your local customer and offer them an incentive for their continued support. Let word of mouth take it from there.

LinkedIn
The reality is that professionals use LinkedIn so it’s a good idea to be associated with it. Join some groups and have discussions are a great strategy. But like we said, it is for professionals, i.e. Bankers, Lawyers and business owners. If you are trying to generate traffic to your bar then LinkedIn may not be your best choice.
